Financial education: how to teach kids about finance?

While financial education is very important, teaching kids about how to manage a budget can be quite a difficult task. Children can be bored to death if you lecture them and they learn best when they are engaged and having fun. As such, you should introduce creative methods so that little ones are interested in this topic and they are able to retain information in the long term. This article will explore two activities that will help do this.

Literary Connection
Participating in the activity with your kids will encourage them to focus. You can read a book that will offer a financial lesson together and then engage into a conversation after that. Talk about why the characters made specific decisions and whether your child agrees with these actions. A good text is “A Penny for Piggy” by Trish Wilson. This teaches the concepts of saving, spending and sharing. Using books to enlighten kids about money is efficient because these are entertaining, more relevant to them and they can identify with the characters.

Art activities
Get your child a workbook filled with several activities and games. Some kids may not be comfortable writing about their financial ideas. As such, this would give them an opportunity to express themselves regarding their saving goals through art. You can give them pencils, markers, crayons and other tools so that they can communicate in the way they are most comfortable with.
