Grocery shopping: order items via voice assistants

Advancements in digital techs might soon turn grocery shopping into an easy task. Analysts and retailers are working on virtual assistant systems such as Amazon Echo and Google Home so that customers can add items like paper towels, detergent and other household products to their shopping cart without difficulty.

According to the 2019 U.S. Smart Speaker Consumer Adoption Report, in 2018, there were 66.5 million such virtual-assistant devices. This is an increase of 40 percent from 2017. Systems by Amazon lead the way with 61 percent market share. The managing director of a retail firm advances that this e-commerce giant’s dominance in the online shopping industry and the growth of voice assistants is a danger for brand owners and retailers. The latter, during the Consumer Goods Forum global summit in Vancouver in June, revealed that Amazon’s system Alexa is going to decide the items that are proposed to you. He said, “that’s quite dangerous, of course, from the point of view of a normal retailer”.

He also foresees a day when a huge part of Amazon’s business will be focussed on selling its own generic white-label products as the first choice for voice commerce orders processed on its virtual-assistant devices.
