Artificial intelligence may reduce missed appointments at the doctor’s

Every year, approximately $150 billion is spent in the US on missed medical appointments. A system based on artificial intelligence could help solve this issue.

Every day, one out of five patients do not show up to their appointment. There is a growing understanding that social determinants such as barriers to access or lack of transportation or health insurance might prevent a lot of people from getting the necessary medical care. To solve this problem, a long-time health administrator, Jerold McDonald, has designed a smart AI-based system. This solution is aimed at understanding the problems that are preventing people from showing up to the doctor’s and would potentially help develop a one cost-effective way to reduce no-shows and would assist in improving health outcomes.

McDonald advanced “If you can understand a person’s story, you can treat them differently from how you would otherwise and help manage their experience”. Thus, he reached out to a friend who is a machine learning expert and together they introduced Omaiven Health, a firm based in Austin to develop an AI-powered healthcare guide that can contact patients and understand the challenges they might be facing. This would as a personal assistant that is the front door to personalised care.
