The supermarket company Waitrose
has revealed that it is planning to significantly expand its online grocery
delivery service in the UK. The decision has been announced after the firm has
processed more than 150,000 orders in a week for the first time. This figure is
more than double the weekly transactions than the supermarket was conducting at
the beginning of the year.
The retailer is going to add 150 more vans to its fleet to
get clients their products. As such, there will be more delivery slots
available in the coming weeks. Since January, Waitrose has been trying to scale
up its online operations by gradually increasing the slots offered to customers
and providing its services to most of the country.
In February, the supermarket announced that by the 1st
of September, 24 more outlets will be launched as delivery shops. Three of these will become operational soon.
Including these stores, there will be 173 Waitrose shops that deliver
products bought from the firm’s official website. Nearly 90 percent of active
UK postcodes can buy items from the online supermarket and the
additional demand in London is supported by two more customer fulfilment centres
in Coulsdon and Enfield. The latter opened its doors on the 7th of
May.
