The popular grocery retailer Aldi has announced that it is planning to open more locations in
the next few years. In fact, it has already identified six sites in Glasgow.
For the past few years, the supermarket firm has been on an expansion drive in the UK. It said
that it has plans to have 1,200 stores by 2025. To the joy of those living in
Scotland, the company has already identified 19 locations in the area where it
is looking for freehold town-centre or edge-of-centre sites suitable for
development. Six of these sites are in Glasgow in Baillieston,
Battlefield/Cathcart, Darnley/Pollok, Partick, Finnieston and Possil. Three
more stores are expected to open on the outskirts of the city at
Stepps/Moodiesburn, Tannochside/Uddingston and Clarkston.
According to the food retailer, they are looking for
locations that are around 1.5 acres and will be able to accommodate a 20,000 sq
ft store with approximately 100 parking spaces. Ideally, they should be on a
prominent main road and with good visibility and access.
Ciaran Aldridge, National Property Director at Aldi
UK, said that the firm “is growing rapidly and we are welcoming around a
million new customers into our stores every year. But there are also hundreds
of towns across the UK where there is not an Aldi”. That is why they are
exploring more opportunities.
