As advanced by several companies, more consumers are
purchasing online instead of in-store. This statement has been confirmed by Ikea as well. The firm suggests that
this trend will keep up even after the pandemic is over.
The chief digital officer of the furniture giant, Barbara
Martin Coppola, has revealed that the retailer has seen a huge increase in e-commerce activities during the
lockdown. When physical stores started reopening they expected more shoppers to
visit outlets. However, the number of people coming in was nowhere near as
pronounced as those buying online. She said, “It’s been incredible because […],
now that the shops are being reopened, the level of ecommerce is actually
sustained”. She advanced that it seems as of the shift towards online
shopping and its convenience is permanent.
The data from Ikea also reveals that e-shoppers have been
adapting to the situation. The things that they have been buying reflected the
reality that they found themselves in. For instance, since many people are now
working from home, there is an increase in demands for home office products
such as desks. More home organisation items, like storage solutions and
decorations, and children’s IKEA products
such as toys, books and crafts, are being bought as well.
