As part of a global expansion, Instagram is introducing a shopping tool that is replacing the
Activity tab. Currently, select users across the world are testing this option.
If you are one of them, when you log in the app, instead of
the traditional heart icon in the navigation menu at the bottom of your screen,
you will see a little shopping bag. Tapping this will redirect you to the
Instagram Shop section that was introduced back in May. Previously, only users
in the US were able to access this feature of the application. Now the option
is being made available to everyone.
Instagram shopping allows people to browse and purchase
products without leaving the mobile app.
Before having a dedicated tab in the navigation menu, this option could be accessed
via the Explore section.
The version of Instagram
Shop that is accessible via the new feature is slightly different
from the previous one. It will allow users to only see items from brands that
they follow. As such, it will act like a personally curated feed of products
from companies that an individual is already interested in. This small test is
being carried out so that the social media firm can assess how to proceed with
its e-commerce offerings.
