Amazon might introduce self-driving boxes in the UK

With the increase in consumer demands, firms are constantly looking for new ways to enhance the shopping experience and to deliver products on time. For instance, Amazon is working on some technology that would eliminate drivers altogether.

According to reports, the e-commerce giant might soon introduce self-driving vehicles in the UK. Apparently, it is looking to hire a team of engineers that will work on its Amazon Scout robots. These are small machines that can drive themselves to deliver products. They roll along the pavement at walking pace before getting to clients’ door.

To ensure that this delivery system is safe, the vehicles are equipped with cameras and sensors. This will help them navigate around pedestrians, pets and obstacles such as bins and sign posts. This solution is already being tested in the US in small areas such as outside Amazon's headquarters in Washington State. Engineers in the UK are going to work in collaboration with the firm’s Scout research lab in Seattle to develop this system and introduce it in the country.

The company advanced, “Our investment in this new Amazon Scout team in the UK, which will consist of dozens of engineers, is driven by our partnership with the Cambridge community and made possible by the talented people who live here”.
