Trying to be more environmentally
friendly, L’Oreal has just announced
that it will introduce make-up recycling bins across 1,000 stores in the UK.
Its Maybelline brand and TerraCycle, the firm with which it has collaborated,
will be installing recycling points in branches of Tesco, Boots, Sainsbury's
and Superdrug.
The UK boss of the cosmetics giant has revealed that it
wants to “lead the way" in creating beauty recycling habits. As such,
customers can already drop off empty make-up products from any brand at the
bins available in participating Tesco
and Superdrug stores. A list of those can be found online. Boots and
Sainsbury’s are going to follow at the end of September.
Products that will be accepted are compacts, eyeshadow
palettes, foundation or concealer tubes, mascara, eyeliner, lipstick and lip
gloss. Make-up brushes, nail polish and aerosols cannot be dropped in the recycle
bins. The items will be collected from the stores, sorted out, cleaned and
recycled into plastic pellets which will be utilised to make goods like outdoor
furniture.
Other chains owned by L’Oreal,
such as The Body Shop and skincare specialist Kiehl's already have this
environmental-friendly approach. For instance, they offer customers rewards for
returning empty products to the stores for recycling.
