Online shopping: sales of second-hand goods increase during lockdown

Along with the shift towards online shopping, there was also a change in consumer attitudes during the lockdown. This could be reflected in the products they looked for or bought.

According to new data, sales of used goods have soared during the pandemic. While high street shops were closed, the idea of ‘pre-loved’ fashion and homewares became trendy. On eBay, transactions processed for these items increased by 30% between March and June this year. In comparison to 2019, this led to an overall 10% growth in the first half of 2020.

The cancellation of events and the closure of pubs and clubs had a huge impact on the wider clothing market. Nonetheless, secondhand or vintage fashion is the fastest growing, and the biggest, category on eBay.

The number of home and garden products bought also increased exponentially. For instance, in comparison to February and March, sales of used chairs, sofas and TVs soared by 41%, 30% and 17% respectively in June and July on the same online marketplace.

The fashion resale site Depop also supported these figures. It advanced that it has seen record sales in the UK, US and Australia. In July, it was processing the request of 20 new users per minute and traffic on its mobile app has tripled year on year.
