The sandwich company Pret
A Manger has announced that it is going to cut 3000 jobs across the UK.
While this is a very sad news for many, the firm says that it is essential for its
survival; it is part of a plan to save the business.
Most of the employees that will be let go work in its stores,
but there will also be 90 roles lost at its support centre. Earlier this summer,
the sandwich company had already announced that it is going to permanently
close 30 of its outlets. Since demand from commuters and office workers has
decreased, the chain has been experiencing quite some difficulties. Currently,
it has 367 stores operating. However, they are open for significantly fewer
hours and staff has been asked to further reduce their working time.
The firm’s chief executive officer Pano Christou advances that he is “gutted” to lose the colleagues. He says, “We've managed to protect many jobs by making changes to the way we run our shops and the hours we ask team members to work”. However Pret A Manger revealed that recovery was “clearly under way”. For instance, their sales have increased by 7% each week since July.
