While grocery stores had already been enjoying an increase
in sales due to the pandemic, the festive period gave them another push. Indeed
companies such as Morrisons have
been benefiting from the holidays.
The firm has revealed that there was a strong demand for
luxury Christmas favourites and this helped it experience an 8.5 % growth in
sales. Since most families spent the holidays at home itself this year, they
wanted to make the most of it and purchased items such as champagne and salmon.
This boosted online sales which
tripled. The firm advanced that consumer shopping patterns were different this
year since restrictions prevented larger gatherings. Moreover, Morrisons delivered
35,000 of its new food boxes in the two weeks before Christmas. These could be
ordered by phone.
According to analysts at the market research firm Kantar,
Morrisons was the only supermarket company of the UK’s four largest chains to
gain market share over Christmas. The firm could make the most of this period
since it reduced prices and increased home deliveries.
The chief executive of Morrisons,
David Potts, advanced that the company has “put its assets at the disposal of
the country” and that “despite the “extremely unpredictable current
circumstance" the firm still "expected profit for the current year to
be in line with expectations”.
