Already an e-commerce giant, it seems that Amazon is looking to venture into other
sectors. The firm will soon dabble into cryptocurrency. Indeed, it is planning
to launch a digital money in Mexico.
The project has not been announced yet. Nonetheless, the company
has recently advertised a series of job posts which points to that direction.
For instance, it is looking for software development engineers. One of the
adverts revealed that this product will allow customers to convert their cash
into a digital currency. Then, they
will be able to use the latter to enjoy online services. These include shopping
for goods or services like Prime Video. Thus, it will act as a payment
offering.
At first, it was revealed that this Digital and Emerging
Payments (DEP) division by Amazon will implement this product in Mexico.
However, another posting hinted that it will be rolled out in all emerging
markets.
According to experts, this project seems to be an “effort to
keep lucrative Prime customers eternally plugged into Amazon’s platform”. It is
not yet clear how it will be integrated with the already existing “Amazon
Coins”. Launched 8 years ago, the latter allows owners to process
transactions in Amazon-issued cash across web games.
