Grocery shopping: how did it change?

Before the pandemic, the activity of grocery shopping involved going to the store. Consumers were starting to look into digital facilities to reach more customers, however, this process was quite slow. The outbreak of Covid-19 changed things completely.

With more people buying on the Web, several supermarkets, big or small, started enhancing their offerings to cater to consumers’ demand. As such, online grocery shopping became the norm for some time. However, with the re-opening of stores, things have changed a little. People are becoming more comfortable going to shops again.

Nonetheless, this increase in e-commerce has given rise to another phenomenon, that of digital grocery. Now, you might think that these two are the same thing, but that is not the case. The first one refers to buying items and completing transactions by visiting a supermarket’s online shopping website. The second one talks about the various digital environments that today’s shoppers go through to complete purchases. It is an omnichannel experience. For instance, they can visit various channels such as the grocer’s e-commerce website, a digital recipe site or social media websites like Instagram and TikTok. To put it simply, they are a mix of the several digital environments that shoppers use to gather inspiration and prepare for their purchases.
