In a recent news, Google
has announced that it is shutting down the standalone app “Android Auto for
Phone Screens”. Instead, those with an Android 12 and wishing to benefit from a
driving-friendly interface will be able to use an Assistant. This is available
within Google Maps or the native Android Auto interface that is built-in in
select cars.
This change was first reported by XDA Developers which
advanced that some users were seeing a message saying that the service is now “only
available for car screens”. They were redirected towards the driving mode of
Google Assistant. At around the same time, another media outlet advanced that
the application is not compatible with Pixel
devices running an Android 12. Afterwards, the tech giant confirmed the
news.
The decision to shut down the Android Auto app is not
a sudden one. Its history itself is a bit messy. It was rolled out late last
year and now, it is already on its death bed. In a statement, Google announced,
“For those who use the on phone experience (Android Auto mobile app), they will
be transitioned to Google
Assistant driving mode”. It said that it is going to be a built-in
mobile driving experience. No further details were shared.
