Mobile app: UK robots deliver fast food to students

Students at the University of Kentucky will be able to enjoy an additional benefit when it comes to food delivery. This is thanks to a mobile app and autonomous robots.

22 of these machines are now available to serve customers. They are controlled by an application that leverages next level technology to move around independently, that is, without human assistance. This means that they will be able to offer contactless delivery. This service has been made available because of a collaboration with Starship Technologies. Counting the University of Kentucky, 25 campuses across the nation give students the opportunity to use these bots.

According to program managers, the bots are able to pick-up food from seven different campus eateries and carry up to 20 pounds of items. Thus, students can easily order something to eat or drink and have them delivered to their dorm at any time. They have to place their order via a mobile app. One of the bots will keep the food fresh in its insulated cooler. Thanks to Computer-vision based navigation, it will make its way across campus. A sensory feature allows it to navigate through the busiest parts of the area. The robots work via a battery that lasts a whole day, at the end of which, they are charged and sanitised for delivery.
