Retail: high street vouchers are being offered in Northern Ireland

The economy minister in Northern Ireland has announced a new scheme that is destined to boost business for the retail sector, considering the damage done during the pandemic.

This project, which costs £145 million, will allow every adult in the country to apply for a free high street shopping voucher worth £100. The application has to be done via an online portal as from the 27th of September. The platform will remain accessible for four weeks. Those who are unable to access the website or who are not too comfortable using the Internet do not have to worry. A phone service will be at their disposal.

People applying will be asked to provide their name, address, age, gender, disability status, National Insurance number, email address and telephone number. To verify the identity of the applicant, the details will be cross-checked against several government databases. The first set of vouchers will be issued on the 4th of October. All of the cards can be used until the 30th of November when the scheme will be closed.

Gordon Lyons advanced, “By giving everyone aged 18 and over in Northern Ireland a pre-paid card worth £100 to spend on local high street businesses, we will encourage many more customers back through the doors of local retail, hospitality and services”.
