As advanced in a previous article, Tesco has introduced a zero-waste shopping service that aims to
decrease the use of single-use packaging.
This project has been made possible thanks to a
collaboration with Loop. How does it
work? Those wishing to adopt this way of purchasing products have to visit the
Loop section of an aisle. This is where zero-waste versions of popular items
are available. There are special re-usable containers that are pre-filled and
ready to pick up. When customers are done shopping, they just have to take
their groceries to checkout. They are charged an extra 20p deposit for each
reusable product. This is later refunded via an app when the packaging is
returned. It should be noted that besides that, the items are of the same
price. As such, once you have finished using the item, you just need to return
the packaging to a collection point in the store and claim the refund on the
application.
This move by Tesco is a bit different from other zero-waste
projects run by independent businesses. These traditionally ask shoppers to
bring their own containers to the shop or to use paper bags and existing
containers, like glass jars, Tupperware boxes or old metal biscuit tins, that
have been donated by the local community specifically for that purpose. Waitrose
also introduced a project similar to this in 2019.
