With both Facebook and Snap offering tools that allow users
to create augmented reality experiences, TikTok
has decided that it cannot be left behind.
The firm has announced that it is launching a new creative
toolset called TikTok Effect Studio that will allow its own developer community
to build augmented reality effects
for its app. It is currently in a private beta testing stage. The video-sharing
company has a new website named ‘Effect House” which has been rolled out for
interested parties to sign up for early access to the features. They have to
fill a form with their name, email, TikTok account info, company, level of
experience with building for augmented reality and examples of their work. They
are also asked if they are using a Mac or PC, to gauge which desktop platform
to prioritise, and whether they would test Effect House for work or personal
use.
TikTok confirmed that this project is its early stages of
testing in a few select markets. However, it could not offer a time frame as to
when the augmented
reality features will become more broadly accessible. It should be
noted that the Effect Studio has been described as an early “experiment”
by the firm and that a lot of its “experiments” are abandoned before being
publicly launched.
