Asda collaborates with Wayve to use autonomous vans

Focussing more on digital tech, the supermarket company Asda is now trialling a new delivery system. It is collaborating with Wayve to do so. This will allow it to use autonomous vans to deliver products to customers’ house.

The firm will start testing this solution in early 2022 and it is the first to commercially trial this tech from the mobility start-up. Wayve will use its expertise in deep learning to help the vehicles navigate through the complex urban delivery routes in London. The test will be run throughout 12 months and during this time, the autonomous vans will be operated under the supervision of a Safety Driver from the company. This collaboration will help both firms use their capabilities to integrate autonomy into the online grocery space. They are also going to explore how technology can shape the future of last mile delivery.

Founded in 2017 and based in London, Wayve uses machine learning and robotics solutions to design its tech. According to the firm, it is the first to deploy autonomous vehicles on public roads with end-to-end deep learning and it is pioneering the AI software, lean hardware and fleet learning platform for AV 2.0: a next generation autonomous driving system. This means that the vehicles are able to quickly and safely adapt to new driving domains anywhere in the world.
