After looking into new technologies such as virtual and
augmented reality, Facebook is now
investing into another tech. It is disbursing $50 million in the creation of
its own ‘metaverse’.
This will be a set of “virtual
spaces” where users will be able to connect, create and explore with other
people who are not in the same physical space as them. Over the next two years,
this money will be used through its XR Programs and Research Fund. The social
media firm also plans to work with other organizations, nonprofits, academic
institutions and governments for this project. This makes sense since Facebook
on its own will not be able to create a ‘metaverse’. The company advanced that
it could take 10 to 15 years for the project to be completed.
While detailing its plans, the social media firm said
that it will be responsible when building the virtual spaces. This involves
making sure that individuals’ privacy are protected by minimising the amount of
data used. It aims to give users more choices for a digital economy while
ensuring that that the technologies created are inclusive and accessible and
keeping people safe online. The announcement of this new venture comes after Facebook
appointed a new chief technology officer.
