While
things were pretty relaxed for the retail sector, new rules regarding
face coverings have emerged. This follows an announcement made by the UK prime
minister.
Boris
Johnson held a press conference during which he said that face coverings will
be made compulsory in shops and on the public transport in England. This
measure has become necessary since two cases of the Omicron variant of the
coronavirus were discovered in the UK. These rules were relaxed in the country
in July. Now, as the prime minister said, we are going back to a position where
we were before.
In response
to the speech, supermarkets across the UK have amended their rules. For
instance, Aldi has already confirmed that masks are needed in its
stores. It is expected that Tesco, Sainsbury's, Lidl, Waitrose, Asda, Iceland,
the Co-op, Morrisons and others will soon update their regulations.
James
Lowman, the chief executive of the Association of Convenience Stores said, “We
are helping retailers to prepare for the change in face covering rules, but
they are extremely concerned about abuse against their staff from customers who
don't want to wear a face covering in a shop”. He advanced that while supermarkets will be encouraged to abide by the
new rules, those who choose not to will not be challenged.
