Autonomous trucks are being tested in Arizona

The Alphabet-owned company Waymo was formerly operated by Google. It has recently announced in a Tweet on Wednesday that it is bringing its autonomous trucks back to Arizona.

It can be said that the state’s roads is one of the firm’s favourite locations for testing its vehicles. Towards the end of 2019, it chose Phoenix for the trial launch of its first ridesharing service called Waymo One. This facility used its autonomous Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans. The company has been developing autonomous cars for the last ten years. Its interest in self-driving trucks is a recent development. These vehicles will be on the roads of Grand Canyon State before the end of the week. Rather than heading into cities where turns might be difficult for trucks to handle, they will stay on the freeways.

When it launched its Atlanta trial in 2018, Waymo announced, “Our software is learning to drive big rigs in much the same way a human driver would after years of driving passenger cars”. The principle of these autonomous trucks are similar as the one for cars except that the custom-built sensors and complex software need to be adapted to suit the size and weight of the larger vehicles to ensure a safe and smooth ride.
