John Lewis: what will happen to its staff after the closure?

A previous article advanced that John Lewis is closing down eight of its stores permanently. The outlets were already experiencing financial troubles but the coronavirus and the shift towards online shopping has accelerated this move. This shutdown means that 1300 jobs are at risk.

The department store company has assured that it is going to work with the affected staff to repost them into new positions. It will find roles for them where possible. The retailer said, “This is a very sad occasion and one we never thought was imaginable when we first opened these shops”. It further advanced that they hoped that they would be able to keep trading in these locations for many more years. However, the outlets were already in trouble and the firm was not able to find a solution to save them.

John Lewis has also expressed its gratitude to clients and workers who have shown their support since the closure was announced last month. It said that its staff has shown “incredible professionalism” and they will remain the firm’s priority, which means that it is going to fully support them in the coming weeks.

After the closure, the total number of John Lewis stores in the UK will be 43.

Staff will be given new roles where possible
