Following the giant Amazon, Tesco is going to launch its first till-free store in the UK. The
firm has been trialling such a system at its head office throughout the past
year.
This news was revealed by chief executive Ken Murphy. He
said that they had installed this digital infrastructure in their Express store
in Welwyn Garden City, which is their head office. This has been open for
approximately a year and it has been a success. This is a great deal thanks to machine learning. As he advanced, this
technology is constantly evolving. As
such, now, they have decided to extend it to another outlet in the coming
weeks. This will allow the firm to test the cashier-less service in a more
urban environment and they are confident that it will be able to deal with
higher traffic. While this project is still in its early stages, the firm is
hopeful that this new format will match the appeal of similar scan-and-go
stores being rolled out by Amazon in the UK.
This announcement follows positive news from Tesco
which revealed that it managed to stay in positive territory in the 13 weeks to
May 29, in comparison to a year ago when supermarkets shelves were stripped
bare.
